My journey into the world of string instrument repair and restoration began at the age of 16, when I started my apprenticeship under the expert guidance of my father, Jørgen Friis, at Merling Violin Shop in Copenhagen, Denmark. For a decade, I honed my craft working side by side with him, learning the values of precision, care, and respect for fine instruments.

Although both Merling and the renowned Friis & Skarsø workshop eventually closed in the early 2000s, my ties to the string community in Copenhagen remain strong. I continue to return regularly to collaborate, stay connected, and carry forward the traditions that shaped my career.

In the early 1990s, I relocated to Vancouver and joined the Vancouver Violin Shop, where I served the string community for over a decade until its closure. From there, I launched my own independent workshop, offering dedicated service to musicians across the Lower Mainland.

Now in my 43rd year in the trade, I specialize in the maintenance, repair, and restoration of violins, violas, and cellos. I’ve had the honor of working with members of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Opera, and the Vancouver Academy of Music, as well as many professional teachers and students.

With over four decades of experience and a legacy rooted in European craftsmanship, I bring a unique blend of old-world tradition and modern precision to every instrument I work on. Whether it’s a simple adjustment or a complex restoration, I approach each project with care, dedication, and a deep appreciation for the music it helps bring to life.
